Steps to Take to Open a Work at Home Business

Many moms leave their jobs when their children are born.  Then, when the children are in school, these same moms may find it difficult to reenter the workforce, or they may not want to because they want to be available for their children.  Still, there is a way to have both–flexibility to be available for your kids as well as a career for yourself.  For many, the answer is working from home.

Finding the Perfect Job

Finding a job you’d like to do is not as hard as you might think.  Focus on an unmet need that you can fulfill.  If you used to be a math teacher, perhaps you can become a math tutor.  If you used to work as an administrative assistant, perhaps you can be a virtual assistant.  The possibilities are endless.

Funding Your New Job

Luckily, many work from home jobs are fairly low cost start ups.  Still, if money is tight, you may need some funding.  You could consider options for unsecured loans as these don’t require any collateral and are usually repaid in a short amount of time.  If you’re worried about how much the monthly payment will be, before you even contact a bank, you could use a loans calculator to get an idea of how much your monthly payment would be.

Getting Out the Word

Once you have your business established, the next thing you have to do is get out the word to prospective clients.  A website is a good place to start.

Then you’ll want to advertise where ever your customers are.  If you offer a tutoring service, see if you can post a flyer in the schools or perhaps at the park or soccer field.  If you’re a virtual assistant, define who your prospective clients are and then join the forums where they chat.  Offer helpful advice without being pushy, and you may soon land your first client.

Don’t forget the importance of word-of-mouth referrals.  When you get your first customers, make sure they are satisfied so they will recommend you to their friends.

Watch Your Business Grow

While it may be hard to initially get your business going, with time, you will gradually add more clients and become busier and busier.  Who says a mom must choose between work and family?  You can do both while working from home.
